Chamonix.net snow report, March 27th 2014

The weather isn't super stable this week, since it snowed, but there is some sunshine mixed in with the clouds, so we went on a short ski tour today, up towards the Col D'Argentiere, behind the Grands Montets.

The plan was to go for the Col du Passon, but we changed it when we saw this untouched area in pristine glacial wilderness.

There was quite a bit of wind coming from the South, so it was refreshing and cold skinning up the Argentiere glacier, but once we got into the protection of the ridge on the higher terrain, the wind wasn't bad, and the snow quality had stayed pretty good. The deep powder from the weekend was slightly wind-buffed, but really soft and skiable - very much still powder.

It was slow going, breaking trail in the heavy deep snow, and the cloud was building from the Italian ridge during the morning, so we only went about half way up to the Col, before we decided it was about the limit of the good visibility, but it was an awesome descent, in some top quality snow.

Unfortunately the camera didn't like the cold or bright light, so there wasn't much chance to film the good snow (I missed a great opportunity to take a photo of our deep fresh tracks), but here is some idea of how the conditions were:
