Chamonix.net snow report, 31st March 2014

The last day of the month, and the weather has stabilised in Chamonix to give us another nice spring skiing session for a few days, before the first April storm rolls in at the end of the week.

Over the weekend, we had hazy warm sunshine in the Chamonix mountains, and there was a mini expo, Snowtopia, at the Grands Montets, with local hand-made skis and crafts. The snow was hard in the morning, and soft in the afternoon, and there were not too many lift lines, despite the busy crowds.

Meanwhile, at the other end of the valley, Les Houches is still open, with a skiable coverage on most of the pistes. The snow at lunch time today was very good soft corn on the upper slopes of Les Houches, at around 2000m altitude, and the sun was shining on the cafe terraces. There were very few people there in contrast with the Grands Montets, which was a mogul factory, even on the groomed pistes at the end of the day.

The mogul skiing around Chamonix right now is probably the best it has been all year, with soft corn bumps. There are also plenty of smoother slopes around, and even some powder in the high altitude backcountry, though the wind and the sun have been at work on that in places.
